The A Level Chemistry (9701) course is divided into five papers content:
Paper | Content | Time assessment |
1 | Multiple Choice (Theory) | 1 hour 15 minutes |
2 | AS Level Structured Questions | 1 hour 15 minutes |
3 | Advanced Practical Skills | 2 hours |
4 | A Level Structured Questions | 2 hours |
5 | Planning, Analysis & Evaluation | 1 hour 15 minutes |
Route 1 (Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3) – AS Level Only
In this route, students take Paper 1 (Multiple Choice), Paper 2 (Structured Questions), and Paper 3 (Practical Assessment) within the same exam series. This option is for those completing the AS Level, which can either be a final qualification or serve as the first stage towards the full A Level.
Route 2 (Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 in Year 1, and Paper 4, Paper 5 in Year 2) – A Level (Staged Over Two Years)
This route allows students to take AS Level exams (Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3) in the first year, then complete the full A Level in the second year by taking Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions) and Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis & Evaluation). This approach provides a structured progression, allowing students to build a strong foundation before moving to advanced topics.
Route 3 (Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3, Paper 4, and Paper 5 in the Same Exam Series) – Full A Level in One Year
In this route, students take all five papers in a single exam series, covering both AS and A Level contents. This option is ideal for students who are prepared for an intensive study approach and want to complete their qualification in a shorter timeframe.
This structure provides flexibility for students to specialize in theoretical chemistry, laboratory research, and applied chemical sciences, depending on their academic and career aspirations in fields such as medicine, engineering, environmental science, and pharmaceuticals.
