A Level Mathematics

The A Level Mathematics syllabus covers key topics across Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. In the Pure Mathematics section, students study Number & Algebra, Functions, Geometry & Trigonometry, Statistics & Probability, and Calculus. The Mechanics paper focuses on applying mathematical concepts to solve physics problems, including topics like Forces, Equilibrium, and Newton's Laws of Motion. Papers 5 and 6 are dedicated to Probability, where students explore discrete and continuous variables, as well as distribution theories. This syllabus prepares students for a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied mathematics. Students develop essential skills like problem-solving, analytical thinking, and logical reasoning, which are crucial for tackling complex challenges.

Course Structure and Content

2 Pure Mathematics  1 hour 15 minutes
3 Pure Mathematics  1 hour 50 minutes
4  Mechanics  1 hour 15 minutes
5  Probability & Statistics  1 hour 15 minutes
6 Probability & Statistics  1 hour 15 minutes

AS Level Mathematics Routes:

  1. Route 1 (Paper 1 and Paper 2):

    • Pure Mathematics only
    • This route focuses solely on Pure Mathematics, which is suitable for students who want to study mathematics at a fundamental level without progressing to A-Level.
  2. Route 2 (Paper 1 and Paper 4):

    • Pure Mathematics and Mechanics
    • Students study Pure Mathematics alongside Mechanics, which involves applying mathematical principles to solve physical problems like forces and motion.
  3. Route 3 (Paper 1 and Paper 5):

    • Pure Mathematics and Probability & Statistics
    • This route combines Pure Mathematics with Probability and Statistics, focusing on data analysis, probability theory, and statistical applications.

A Level Mathematics Routes:

  1. Route 1 (Paper 1, 3, 4, and 5):

    • Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics
    • This route offers a comprehensive study, covering Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics, offering a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied mathematics.
  2. Route 2 (Paper 1, 3, 5, and 6):

    • Pure Mathematics and Probability & Statistics
    • This route combines Pure Mathematics with further study of Probability and Statistics, focusing on statistical methods, data analysis, and advanced probability concepts.

Notes:

  • AS Level: Students who follow an AS Level route will be eligible for grades A to E and do not progress to A-Level.
  • A Level: Students following an A-Level route can achieve grades from A to E*, depending on their performance in both the AS and A-Level exams.

This structure offers flexibility for students to choose between a focus on Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, or Probability & Statistics, based on their future academic or career aspirations.
